HAMILTON – A township police officer was hospitalized with serious injuries Friday night after his cruiser was struck while assigned to divert traffic from Route 322 due to downed wires, according to a police press release.

The accident happened about 10:02 p.m. Friday on Route 322 at Route 50.

Police said Officer Rudolph was stationed in a marked patrol car with activated emergency lights. The other vehicle, a 2002 Volkswagen, was headed west on Route 322 and struck the cruiser’s front end.

Rudolph was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center. Hamilton Rescue Squad assisted at the scene. His first name was not released.

The Volkswagen’s driver is identified as Isaiah Rasul Muhammad Smith of Whitsett, Guilford County, North Carolina. Smith was not injured, police said.
